In 1964, astronomer Nikolai Kardashev proposed a way to measure a civilization's progress: by how much energy it can harness.
- Type I A civilization that harnesses all the energy of its home planet — every joule of sunlight, every gust of wind, every watt of geothermal heat.
- Type II Harnesses the entire energy output of its star.
- Type III Harnesses the energy of its entire galaxy.
Earth is currently around 0.7. Solar is the fastest path to Type I.
